ledger.com/start — Official Start Guide

Follow these official steps to set up your Ledger device, install Ledger Live, secure your recovery phrase, and connect safely to Web3 services.

What you'll need before you begin

Before you proceed with ledger.com/start, make sure you have your new Ledger device out of the box, a computer or smartphone with a supported operating system, and a stable internet connection. Do not install or run unofficial software — use only Ledger Live from ledger.com or the official app stores.

Step 1 — Verify your device and packaging

On ledger.com/start, the first priority is device authenticity. Confirm the packaging is sealed and the tamper-evident stickers are intact. If anything appears altered, pause the setup and contact official Ledger support. Ledger never asks for your 24-word recovery phrase by email or chat.

Step 2 — Install Ledger Live

Download Ledger Live from the official site via ledger.com/start or your platform's app store. Ledger Live is the official desktop and mobile companion that lets you configure the device, manage apps, and view assets in one secure place.

Step 3 — Initialize the device with Ledger Live

Open Ledger Live and follow the on-screen setup flow. Choose Set up as new device to create a new wallet or Restore device if you are recovering from an existing recovery phrase. During ledger.com/start setup, Ledger Live will ask you to choose a PIN directly on the device—never share this PIN.

Step 4 — Secure your recovery phrase

Ledger devices generate a 24-word recovery phrase on the device itself. Write it down on the provided recovery sheet and keep it offline and private. Ledger support will never ask you to type or send this phrase. Treat the recovery phrase as the ultimate access key to your funds.

Step 5 — Install crypto apps and add accounts

After initialization, use Ledger Live's Manager to install blockchain-specific apps (for example, Ethereum, Bitcoin, Solana). Add accounts within Ledger Live and verify addresses on your physical device before receiving funds. This prevents phishing or malicious software from intercepting transactions.

Step 6 — Connect to Web3 apps safely

When connecting to decentralized applications, use official integration prompts and verify transaction details on your Ledger device before approving. Avoid connecting to unknown or suspicious websites. For additional privacy steps and network customizations, consult the Ledger knowledge base at ledger.com/support.
